Non solo sport exhibition – urban center milan

‘non solo sport’ is an exhibition hosted by comune di milano of twenty stadiums each
from a different country. the objective of the exhibition is to highlight not only the architecture
of stadiums, but also the characteristic of the new generation of sports facilities, examining
their impact on cities – urban, architectural, economic, social – economic potential related to
investment properties, multi-functionality of the structures, activities of clubs, to stimulate
debate about the expectations and the quality of the italian stadiums, and finally to rethink
the relationship between the stage the city and sport. here are some of the highlights.

‘camp nou stadium’ by f. mitjans – miró, g. barbon and s. mauri is the largest stadium
in europe. to celebrate the stadium’s 50th anniversary, the entire facade will be covered
by a mosaic which will highlight the team’s colors: navy and burgundy, and the colors
of the catalan flag: yellow and red. the mosaic’s architect, foster, declared that he was
drawing from architect antoni gaudi in a rediscovery of the age-old trencadis tradition
made known by the great spanish artist.

characterized by the movement of its upper contours and by a covering crafted on
the model of a ‘bird’s nest’, ‘national stadium’ (birds nest) by herzog & de meuron takes
on the softness and irregularity of natural forms inherent to the chinese traditions.
the national stadium consists of a network of structural levels which form the basin of
the stadium and support the immense sliding rood completely made of translucent ETFE.

‘songjang stadium’ by progretto CMR is characterized by four external towers, three
of which will be used for administrative offices and the other for a hotel. the building
is, from the functional standpoint, subdivided into four levels: the ground level will
host a shopping mall, on the third and fourth levels a spa and a wellness center:
the second level, on the other hand, will be entirely occupied by the terraces.

the ‘wembley stadium’, built directly where the old british imperial stadium once stood,
features a reticulated arch which supports the sliding roof. its elipitcal basin with a glass
base contains various public access points and amenities such as a hotel with 200 rooms.
access to the stadium is provided for by a new intricate network of public transit designed
to reduce air pollution to a minimum.

‘aviva stadium’ designed by global design practice populous is the new home for irish rugby.
the layout has been calculated to optimize the spectator’s view of the playing field and to
reduce to a minimum the impact of the structure upon the surrounding urban context.
the special facade / covering is made of transparent staves which effectually cause this piece
of architecture to be a reference point of the dublin skyline with its capacity to reflect the sky
and to modify the perception of it according to atmospheric conditions.
